Maintaining Your Bamboo Floor

Bamboo flooring is extremely simple to care for, and should not be treated any differently to solid timber or laminate flooring. Astoria Floors will gladly offer advice on maintaining your new bamboo floors.

A complete re-surface of the floor is usually performed every 10 to 15 years, although some people choose to re-coat their floor more often (every 5 to 7 years).

Hear are some tips to help you care for your bamboo floor:

  • Vacuum and sweep the floor regularly with a soft brush to remove dirt and grit.
  • Place mats at exterior entrances to reduce the introduction of abrasive particles.
  • Attach felt to the base and legs of moveable furniture to avoid scratches.
  • Use rugs in areas which are exposed to high traffic (e.g. walkways and hallways).
  • Clean up spills promptly.
  • Use a microfibre cloth or mop to remove dust.
  • Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes or moving hard objects to prevent scratching.

  1. I love hardwood floors but it sounds like the maintenance is rather extensive and there is a lot of things to consider when you have them. No high heeled shoes, rugs everywhere etc. is bamboo that soft that it requires so much delicacy to maintain it’s look? You put in there how much some people resurface their floors but what do you recommend be done?

  2. I never knew that bamboo or any hardwood floors had so many rules to follow. I mean you can’t wear high heels, you have to put furniture on casters so it doesn’t scratch the floor etc. but I am thinking that Bamboo seems to be a little strong and more durable than that. You put in there how much some people resurface their floors but what do you recommend be done?

  3. It really doesn’t appear that bamboo flooring is any more complicated to take care of then other hardwood flooring is. This was very interesting and you pointed out some things that I had not even thought of like not wearing high heels on these floors. Putting the furniture on casters so that you can move it without scratching the floor makes a lot of sense.

  4. For the type of floor this is and the money you put into it, not to mention the durability you got out of it and the life span that it is supposed to have, the maintenance required is really not that much to deal with. You would probably just have to change some daily habits like taking your shoes off when you come in the house no wonder people in Japan do that.

  5. From what it sounds like to me bamboo floors are a lot easier to maintain then some carpet. You don’t have to shampoo it and vacuum all the time or use spot remover on the stains that the kids put on the floor. How hard is it to clean up after a spill on hardwood floors? Bamboo is awesome and I think it would be well worth the money.

  6. I can’t believe how easy it is to take care of my bamboo floors. I honestly think that they are less trouble than the carpet sometimes. You have to shampoo the carpets sometimes and then every few years tear them up and get new carpet because they get worn out. Bamboo you don’t have to do that with you can just refinish them every few years and you are good to go.

  7. I agree Ned… my bamboo floor is so easy to look after and keep clean. I recently bought a mop which has a micro-fibre cloth on the base and a spray container just above it. I just fill the container with water and then apply a light spray occasionally as I move around the house. It only takes a couple of minutes which is a massive difference to when I had to vacuum the carpet (especially with a dog in the house).
